Once described by Taylor in the History of Great Barrington, “This tract of country, wild, forbidding, and destitute of roads other than the Indian trail”, has managed to keep its untamed personality while bringing in the comforts of civilization. Come see the spectacularly scenic Berkshire hills—a beautiful place to visit any time of year. Ideally located just 2 ½ hours from both Boston and New York City, the Berkshires is known widely as a cultural mecca. All of these activities take place amid spectacularly scenic rural hills, mountain streams, and lakes. You will delight in the discovery of an incredible range of retail establishments, from antiques dealers to outlets to specialty shops.
Great Barrington maintains its small town charm and character while serving as the commercial hub of southern Berkshire County. A unique array of fine restaurants anchors the town’s tourism industry. Great Barrington was the site of the first organized resistance to British rule in the colonies, was the birthplace of scholar and political leader W.E.B. DuBois, a founder of the NAACP, and, as the home of inventor William Stanley, was the first municipality with electric streetlights.
The town is situated on the banks of the Housatonic River, and is bordered by East, Beartown, and Monument Mountains. Did you know 90 of the 2,157 miles of the Appalachian Trail passes through our town? Fly fishing and mountain hiking, snow skiing and whitewater rafting, car racing and racing schools, concerts from Baroque to Rock, world-class museums and Shakespeare theatre, and more, are yours for the asking.

Soon thereafter, purchasers formed the not-for-profit Hancock Shaker Village, Inc., to preserve the lands, buildings, and the way-of-life history. The village has been beautifully restored and is a welcome retreat from today’s hectic pace. The Village comes alive through tours, exhibitions, demonstrations, and participatory activities. You may talk with the artisans in the shops or learn about the animals on the farm. Your children can even take a lesson with a “Shaker” schoolteacher. It is open year round.
